E-mail on Galaxy TAB

I have been attempting to set up my wife's e-mail account on her new Samsung Galaxy Tab without success.

I have entered her e-mail address and password on the first screen and then entered the manual setup. Selected POP3 Account

User Name as fn.ln@btconnect.com

Passsword already entered

Pop3 Server as pop3.btconnect.com

Port 110

Outgoing Settings as

SMTP Server smtp.btconnect.com

Port: Defaults to 587 (I have tried changing it to 110 but no joy either)

Security Type None

Require Sign In Selected - with login details as above.

This produces the message that

'Setup could not Finish'

Unable to connect to server

Does anyone know what is going wrong? This should be easy. Note my wife has one of the sub e-mail addresses and I have set it up with SMTP authentication.

Re: E-mail on Galaxy TAB

Hi

I'm sorry that none of our forum users were able to offer any advice on this issue. Did you manage to get the secondary email account working?

If you are not using a BT Business connection you would need to set up SMTP authentication on the secondary email address and ensure that it is logging onto the SMTP server with the correct log in details.

I hope this helps

Kind Regards

Re: E-mail on Galaxy TAB

There is a simple reason for mobile phones failing to send out BT Connect emails, and a complicated workaround that works very well on my HTC Desire HD.

The problem is that BT Connect only permits the use of port 25 for its SMTP outgoing mail while most mobile service providers block port 25 apparently because it is used by "spammers".  BT Internet (i.e. the consumer version) has port 587 as an alternative intended to deal with precisely this problem, but BT Connect does not seem to talk to its cousins and has not followed suit.

Some mobile service providers have their own SMTP servers (o2 has for example) but the downside here is that using the mobile service SMTP will prevent use on wifi.

The solution is to use (or more accurately abuse) a Google gmail account.  First, access Google and open a GMAIL account that you will not use for any other purpose.  Next, change the default "sender" address in the gmail account so messages sent through it show as having been sent by your BT Connect account.  Now set up your BT account on your mobile phone, using the usual POP3 server for receiving messages BUT for sending messages change the SMPT server from mail.btconnect.com to smtp.gmail.com.  You must also set the sending user and password entries to those you use for your dummy gmail account.  Finally you must set the outgoing security to SSL which will open port 465.  The mobile phone will then send and receive messages on BT Connect.

BT Connect should note that many customers are diissatisfied with its failure to deal with a problem that BT Internet noticed long ago.  At least one correspondent has moved his account and such is the flexibility of GMAIL accounts that I may do likewise before long.

BT really need to sort this out - Having the same problems - expected to be able to get device and operate email straight away - BT customer service on this issue is SHOCKING! Do they actually have any technically trained staff that don't just read off script?
