I've got myself some new DECT phones (Siemens Gigaset S685IP) which can also connect to VOIP and have successfully set them up with my BBV voip lines. I can initiate outgoing and answer incoming calls to start with, but either way after about 45seconds the call cuts off and I get an error message on the phone reading "IP Status, Code 701". It also seems that it takes about 10s for sound to cut in on an incoming call (outgoing calls have sound from the outset).
This is all very similar (but without the error message) to what happens quite often if I use the BT Office Communicator softphone which is why I am posting here. I also note other forum posts showing dropped calls, but no resolution is listed. My internet connection seems good 6.6m out and 1.1m in with an up time of days/weeks without a drop.
Googling Code 701 says this is a generic SIP error about "location format not supported" so I was wondering whether BT have any checks on their server which check whether the router is theirs or not (I am using a Draytek 2820Vn).
Now there are some extra settings in my phones setup screen which I have not encountered with BBV to date (or in my router's VOIP settings either for that matter) and I was wondering whether anyone could shed light on their potential use with BBV to resolve the above issues. These settings are:-
1 Registrar server
2 STUN server
3 Outbound proxy
If anyone has any thoughts it would be appreciated.

Hi mdowers
Not sure what the 701 code is that will be in relation to your handset not the network
Bt will not provide the requested information to setup 3rd part equipment.
As to your Btoc make sure it is allowed through your firwall and anti virus,
as to the phones only thing i can advise is make sure port 5060 upd is opened.
If you are still having issues with Btoc call the helpdesk on 0800 169 1146 option 2 and they will be able to help.

Code 701 is something like a disconnection error code. Investigation through many other forums etc and with direct communication with Siemens and a BT VOIP partner concluded that BT operated a non-standard VOIP service which specifically prohibits 3rd part hardware or software. NB This is on BT BBV, but is not believed to be the case for BT Broadband Talk (BTs domestic VOIP system).
If you search BT's BBV KB articles for "will my existing IP phone work?" you will see BT say no.

I also doubt very much that this is a SIP 701 error. I use a number of different phones with the BT service, Cisco, Grandstream, Freeswitch PBX and have never seen this error.

Hey guys,
I don't know if anyone out there is still triyng to figure this out? But I have just spent AGES trying to get my BT Business Broadband Voice service to work with third party clients - including Gigaset handsets, which did originally give the 701 error... The settings which work for me are:
Reg refresh time: 900
STUN: no
STUN refresh: 0
NAT referesh: 0
Outbound proxy: always (the proxy as you probably know is www.bbvservice-560344.bt.com)
I also have it working perfectly with the Bria iPhone app, settings for this are:
SIP Reg Interval: 900
Wifi & Cell UDP keep alive: 150
Hope this helps someone! and if anyone has X-Lite working, please share your settings!
Will

Hi Will
The outbound proxy is different for some customers it is all down to your number range so the one you have provided will only work for certain customers.

Hi Will,
Thank you so much for these settings for the Siemens C475Ip. After much time wasting from BT techies and Siemens techies i was on the verge of cancelling my BT VoIP service and changing my business number!!!
These settings worked for me and I am able to send and receive calls now without the error 701 intercepting after 60 seconds.
Once again many thanks for sharing this vital informtation
Judy
