I use Internet Business Pack (free rental) to host my domain.

Vistor statistics get produced regularly, and put in a /stats/ directory for all to see.

The statistics are helpful to me, but I don't think I ought to be making available to the public the IP addresses of all visitors to my site.

This hosting package does not appear to permit password protection for directories.

Can anyone advise on which settings need to be changed to restrict public access?

Many thanks,

   Nigel.

Thank you for the link. I do not get a "drop-down menu" on the website security page, so I suspect that feature is not available to me. It could be that something is restricted on my "business pack" rental.

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks,

  Nigel.

See the following thread. You will want to protect the /stats directory with a .htaccess file.

http://btb.lithium.com/t5/Website-hosting-domains/Password-protecting-Pages-on-the-website/td-p/10587

Thank you. I'll give it a try. It may be a while before I can report whether I've got it to work.

In the meantime, can anyone you me whether it is normal for BT-hosted domains by default to offer the IP addresses of visitors to all viewers on the URL http://yourdomain.co.uk/stats/index.html ? I have a domain with another hosting provider where the statistics are kept private to the domain owner.

There is an option under "BT Website Manager"/"Web Stats"/"Advanced" to turn off the number of sites in the report. Aside from two drawbacks, that is the answer. The drawbacks are:

I would like myself to know whether enquirers are local or from far away;

It doesn't work as described, and turning "sites" off means showing just the top ten.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

    Nigel.

Hi there,

I just wanted to provide a link to a handy tool for quickly making a .htaccess and/or .htpasswd file:

http://www.clockwatchers.com/htaccess_tool.html

You can use this tool to create the entry for your .htaccess file as well as the matching .htpasswd file. When done, simply place them in the directory you would like to protect.

Peter

Good news. It works. The IP addresses of visitors are now kept private.

I found the convention for the full server path in another thread, so I reproduce it here with thanks to Chantale .

/services/webpages/[1st_letter_of_domain]/[2nd_letter_of_domain]/[domain]/[filepath]

Thanks also to Dave and pmillman for the suggestions.

  Nigel.
