MX Record - IP Address??

Hi,

I have recently taken out my hosting with BT, I had my domain name registered with FastHosts.

I have now changed the A record on the Advanced DNS settings on FastHosts to the BT IP address - 209.235.144.9,

this has worked so far however I now need to change the MX Record of the settings aswell. The problem I am having is that I only have the option on FastHosts to change this to an IP address and BT are only giving me the details ibmr.btconnect.com - and this is not being accepted by FastHosts. Does anyone know the IP address that I can use?

Until I get this resolved I can not confirm my ownership of the domain name and upload my website 😞

Any help anyone can provide will be a great help.

It sounds like Fasthosts have this set up in a very non-standard way and I have never known any domain registrar to only allow an IP address in here!

You can't put in the IP address as BT's system does specifically check for the ibmr.btconnect.com, and also they likely have more than one IP address mapped to that hostname.

All you can really do is find a different provide for managing the DNS for that domain - don't worry, you don't need to actually transfer the domain, just cahnge the nameservers.

Something like http://freedns.afraid.org ought to do the job, or there are paid DNS providers available too.

Alternatively, you could transfer the domain to BT or indeed another domain registrar and let them manage the DNS, although the first option will be quicker.
