Web site optimization can be a "Dark Art", the only real way to ensure a good listing being to pay for it. Here are a page full of Google Results:Google Results

You'll note that, after the Sponsored Links, the first article is from Wikipedia. For subjects such as this, you can rely on wikipedia to provide accurate information.

If you have Advanced Web Hosting with us, then you will have access to EasySiteOptimiser:

EasySiteOptimizer v 1.6 User Guide

As John points out SEO or Search Engine Optomisation is far from an exact science. There are no magic code tweeks that will work miracles for a websites ranking in the search engines. Search engines are very secretive about how they rank pages, but through experimentation some basic rules have been figured out.

Google and most other search engines do not use at the META tags for description and keywords to rank a site, they do look at them but don't pay a lot of attention. Instead they actually read the text content of the page itself.

This started over a decade ago in responce to unscrupulous webmasters stuffing hundreds of unrelated keywords into the tags in order to skew results.

By far the best way to improve a websites ranking are high quality backlinks, links from another website to yours. High quality links are those created by other people on websites outside your control eg: other webmasters. So you may want to explore exchanging links with similiar or related websites, it never hurts to email them and ask.

Forum posts and signature tagging also help but not quite as much as does submitting your site to directory indexes or link farms, however using those last two can sometimes backfire and you will be marked down as it were for using them.

Content, More Content and YET MORE CONTENT!

Google especially likes to find unique content that updates frequently, if your site contains text copied from elsewhere on the web don't expect to ever rank highly.
