How long after buy domain name should I b able to access it through manage services on my account?

I have bought a domain name (first timer) and plan to use it as an alternative to the web address I have at the minute a googlesites one. On google sites Im stuck where it asks for `Add the TXT record below to the DNS configuration for littlekitchencompany.co.uk` At the minute I cannot access my domain name on my account through manage services although it does show up in products you own under domain names. As I said I am new to this and dont know if there are time delays on aspects of the purchase. Please help me!?
