I dont think it is as simple as that

The Office 365 mailboxes are trying to route emails from the cloud directly to our exchange server on the dynamic IP we have from BT, This is the IP address entered during the Hybrid Configuration Wizard. So I dont think Office 365 is doing a MX lookup its trying to route direct to us, But the dynamic IP Address is on some Blacklists and a the whole range is on a PBL which I think is why microsoft cant route the emails.

I am actually using 1&1 as a SMTP relay at the moment for external emails, which is working well apart from the Hybrid Send Connector.

Hope this makes it a little clearer ?

Hi,

I am setting up a Small Business Server 2011 and trying to get exchange to send emails via DNS rather than a SMTP Gateway.

the main reason is to configure a hybrid configuration with Office 365 email. And the Hybrid system and the wizard doesnt like using a smtp gateway it wants to use DNS to route emails to mydomain-co-uk.mail.eo.outlook.com and my current dynamic IP Address seems to be on a Public Block list / Black Lists

My Question is if I upgrade to a fixed IP Address (£5 per month) can I then route emails via DNS rather than being forced to use smtp.btconnect.com mail relay.

I dont mind using the mail relay for other email its just the office 365 i want to route directly.

thanks,

Ian

How about removing BT from the equation and route the email through Googles gmail servers by changing the MX records?
