BT Versatility - Share some light?

I currently work for this company as an IT technician Part Time - and as usual im roped into troubleshooting a problem we have with our phone system. Telecommunications is not my 'thing' as to say, so am looking for some advice.

Problem we have is that we have just purchased a Printer/Fax machine, and basically want to connect the Fax to the current Phone Line in our office. I have obtained a Phone Line splitters, in order to place both the Phone Line cable and the Fax cable into the same Phone Input. When I do this the phone loses power, and doesnt work.

Any ideas guys???

got another one?

does it cut off when the phone is in only or is it when the fax goes in?

I dont think its the splitter, as the Printer/FAX Machine also provide a similar piece of kit that plugs into the phone line port, and the phone cable will plug into that - and with the same result.

It seems, that the phone power will work fine, until there is something in between the direct connection of the phone and the phone port, so it occurs as soon as the phone goes in.

Do you think it could be a power issue, that the splitter is blocking the small current that powers the phone?

If you are connecting the fax to the versatility box then what kind of splitter are you using? You should only be able to connect one device at a time since the phones are hard wired.

The broadband module will be connected to a socket on the wall via a DSL splitter, have you tried putting your phone splitter into the PSTN side of this and attaching the fax and phone to this?

The fax is connecting to a Phone Port on the wall in the office. Basically im putting the splitter onto this Phone Port at the office where the phone is currently plugged in! Sorry Im not 100% of the names of the components are hence the confusion!

The explanation for this problem is simple.

From the message title and content, it is assumed that you are working with a BT Versatility Featurephone connected to a PABX master socket, and that you are using a four pin adaptor to connect the fax machine and Featurephone to the same socket.

The cause of the difficulty would be the difference in wiring between a Featurephone line plug, the adaptor and the line plug on a standard telephone or fax machine.

The adaptor and the fax machine line plug (type 431A) will use pin positions 2,3,4 and 5. The Featurephone line plug (type 631A) will use pin positions 1,2,5 and 6. The BT Versatility system and the PABX socket will support a standard telephone or fax machine. However, the adaptor will provide no connection at pin positions 1 and 6 for the Featurephone.

A solution would be to provide a separate extension socket for the fax machine.

We seem to need a splitter which works with the versatility- are they available and from where?

Hi all,

You cannot share any device with a Bt Versatility V8 featurephone.

The way to connect the fax machine is to connect it to a spare extension socket on the system, remove that extension from the incoming ring group and when an incoming/c fax call is received ( you hear fax tones when answering an incoming call ) you then do an internal transfer to the extension on the system which contains the fax machine.

To send a fax remember to put 9 in front of the outgoing number.

A separate extension socket would require the use of a PABX master socket and two pair telephone cable. The socket should be wired and connected to the BT Versatility system unit in accordance with the BT Versatility Installation manual.

If a dedicated fax line is used, the system may be configured to route an incoming fax direct to the fax machine socket. The fax line may also be available for outgoing calls from other extensions if required. Programming information may be found in the BT Versatility Owner's manual.

The BT Versatility manuals are available in pdf format.

Door entry phone one way transmission. Have checked programming and changed the 008 extension card. Still same fault.

Any ideas.
