Email and my ipod touch

I have just bought a 3rd gen Ipod touch and am unable to get the ipod to send and receive mail reliably.

My account is a business one (btconnect.com) I have a network user name, a network password, a primary email account and password then two secondary email accounts with their passwords. It is one of the secondary accounts that I want to be able to access on the ipod touch.

When setting up the ipod initially with itunes the PC syncs the email account settings you need, this allows you to download your mail via the router but does not allow you to send any mail. Away from home I can do neither, I can only assume from this that the IPod is utilizing my BTnetwork username & password settings in my Router

This problem obviously has something to do with being pointed in the right direction and then a handshake.

In it set up the IPod asks for:

1. POP account information

2. Address (fred@btconnect.com)

3 Description (as it says on the tin!)

Incoming Mail Server:

1. Host Name ?

2. User Name

3. Password

Outgoing Mail Server: (Several server options available)

1: Host Name

2. User Name

3. Password

4. SSL on/off

5.Authentication options: Password/MD5 Challenge responce/NTLM/ HTTP MD5 Digest

6. Server Port: 587 / 465 or other ????

Can anyone help with solving this problem I am yet to come up with a satisfactory solution that dosn't involve forwarding mail onto another account

Host name: pop3.btconnect.com

Username: customerusername (omit '@btconnect.com')

Password: customerpassword

Outgoing Mail server: smtp.btconnect.com (tap this option for the info below)

Primary server: smtp.btconnect.com (no other SMTP servers switched on)

Other SMTP servers: <none>

(e.g. smtp.btconnect.com)

Host Name: smtp.btconnect.com

Username: customerusername@btconnect.com (include '@btconnect.com')

Password: customerpassword

Use SSL: Off

Authentication: Password

Server port: 25

NOTE: SMTP authentication MUST be enabled to allow customer to send email on the move. A solution whereby SMTP Authentication is disabled will NOT work when EU is away from their BT Business broadband.

Advanced:

Deleted messages: Remove after one week

Incoming settings:

Use SSL: Off

Authentication: Password

Delete from server: Never

Server Port: 110

Hi and thanks for your prompt reply / help.

I have applied all the settings you have listed (these are only slightly different from the ones I have been trying / playing with).

I sent an email to the Ipod address from a separate PC/address and received the message OK on the IPOD. This is about as far as we got before, after I had used Itunes to sync the settings. Receiving mail at home works OK via our router.

When I tried to send a test message the following dialog poped up:

Cannot Send Mail

The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.btconnect.com failed. Additional outgoing mail servers can be configured in Settings>mail, contacts and calendars.

This dialog isn't much help really as it dosn't explain why

There must be a rational explanation ?

You probably need to put outgoing server as the ISP connection you are sending mail through. eg if bought from 02 , then you need their outgoing server, same for Orange or Virgin

Have you enabled outgoing authentication? You should not need to change mail servers with this enabled.

The IPOd touch is not a mobile phone it shouldn't neded a ny conection with a mobile network. it only works with a wireless internet connection.

These are the settings I used as per your instruction:

Use SSL: Off

Authentication: Password

Server port: 25

Other than by selecting, Authentication: Password on the IPod Touch

I cannot see how else you can "enable" Authentication

Interestingly when you go to send or receive any mail it doesn't ask for any passwords! so why use password authentication

Should my Network login username and password feature somewhere ( *******@hg57.btclick.com) or is this irrelevant

Good point, it's not a phone.

You won't need your HG details, this is already stored in the router.

If you can receive then the connection is fine and the router is working. The passwords are being set up by you in the settings so it won;t ask for it during connection.

The fact you cannot send must be down to some setting within the ipod, are you sure your connecting to the BT WiFi?

Try deleting the whole lot and starting again, create a pop3 account first then add an smtp server.

Hi again and thanks for your patience,

I have tried deleting the whole lot and reset the pop3 account info it then takes you straight onto the smtp setup. This time I ended up with additional smtp servers which I don't seem to be able to delete. Either way the wireless connection links to my home network (router) and retrieves mail but still fails to send, providing the fault message as before. The WIFI recognises my network name from the router OK.

Going back to my *******hg.70.btclick.com details as these are stored within my (netgear) router if I am away from home and want to access my mail how will someone else's Wifi connection enable me to access my mail.

Hi there,

Might be worth you going into an apple store and asknig them to check the settings.

If you are on another WiFi you will still be able to receive mail fine. Not sure about sending though, if there are no SMTP authentication options you might have some issues.

Probably better speaking to an apple expert though.

Went into an Apple Store, and they confirmed that POP accounts do not work well with mobile ( devices - this includes items such as the IPOD Touch ) the only way of sensibly making the POP account work is to use a IMAP account either by borrowing the settings when away from your own Router or redirecting the Mail to your acount, not quite sure how I am going to do this yet, if you have any knowledge of mail forwarding being IMAP and POP it would be useful.

Thats a strange answer, I wonder what the mean by 'well'. In my experience soemthing either works or it doesn't, not slightly work sometimes but not for everyone. POP accounts work perfectly fine with mobile devices, if anything IMAP requires more of a setup.

If that's what they told you I would be seriously scepticle. Sounds like you got the YT guy.

I am now as concerned as you are!

The problem is we have tried to set up as per my home PC and the device won't send.

Looking at the Apple forums numerous other people have the same issues with POP accounts. But no clear instructions on how to solve them

I have registered with a G MAIL account and I am looking at the forwarding option to see if I can get this to work.

Going back to my BT POP account, I still do not understand how when I am away from home and I log on to a WIFI connection the ITouch would be able to communicate with the BT server without my Network login instructions surely these need to be in the background somewhere as they are at home in your Router.

PC<---> Router

Ipod Touch <--> Secondary email account -->Primary email account -> Network Username

You can use the bt mail server, incoming and outgoing on any connection as long as you provide an email address and password. This is obvious for receiving but not so for sending, there should be a section within the iphone that allows you to assign a user name and password for sending. If there isn't then it must be a flaw with the software.

Your forwarding strategy may work though.

I had the same problems.

When trying to set up on btconnect the necessary screens were not available .

To get around this I set up mail account with another service provider that worked then edited the settings to my mail account on btconnect

For IPod Touch, using WiFi, answer is:

BTConnect SMTP server doesn't accept password authentication.

So, outgoing server just needs to be setup as follows:

Host Name: smtp.btconnect.com

User Name:

Password:

Use SSL: Off

Authentication:

Server Port: 25

Leave username, password & authentication blank
