Sending & receiving faxes using Voip. HELP

We have recently set up business premises after spending 3 years in our home office using the same number for both calls & faxes. We receive alot of work via fax.

When I placed my order with BT Business, I asked for a separate fax line as we wanted a separate number for our faxes, but was led to believe by the sales guy that I wouldn't need this - that I could just send & receive faxes via email using Voip, he made it sound so simple.

I'm having real problems with this. I have activated & configured using the 0560 number I was given, but have no idea where I go to send my faxes! I can't seem to find any help for this.

Do I just go to my email & send a fax by inserting the other person's fax number rather than their email address? Also can I give my customers my 0560 number for them to send me faxes & then receive them in my email inbox?

Do I have to have a handset just to send faxes?

Do I even need my fax machine anymore?

Please can someone help me before my pc goes out the window!

Hi nat_jenkins,

Unfortunately the Business voip service does not include a fax to email function .

Not sure if this is what the sales agent was suggesting but BT do offer a PC to fax service BT PC Fax. This does not require a fax machine but you will need to sign up for this separately and a monthly charge is applicable.

Alternatively, if you have a fax machine then this can be plugged into the same line as your Broadband line sharing the PSTN connection via the Broadband filter.

You can have a fax machine plugged in, but not all are compatible with the voip service, there is not a definative list of what machines will work, you can call 0800 169 1146, option 2, for further help

We currently have a fax machine plugged into our VOIP line, we give out the VOIP number as our fax number, and send faxes via the VOIP line using the fax machine. You may need to mess about with configuration to get the fax machine to work well with the VOIP.

Our fax machine is starting to play up, so we have started to make use of the fax-to-email websites that are out there. You'll find plenty if you google fax-to-email. There are sites where you can receive faxes for free, and only pay to send faxes.
