Slow laptop issues

I have a relatively old laptop which is 'slow'' and often 'hangs' I keep getting a message ' virtual memory low' how can I fix this e.g.. can I buy a plug in memory chip etc and if so where where from.

I have done all the normal housekeeping stuff clearing temporary files etc

Any other clues on speeding up my laptop would be very welcome or do I just buy a new laptop

Best place to get memory upgrades is www.crucial.com just download the scanner and it will scan the memory on your machine and advise what is needed to upgrade.
