How do you Work on Website without effecting live site?

Hi,

I am trying to modify my site and have followed the instructions but seem to end up working on the live site. This is what i do:

1. Create a backup of the live site - in fact i created two back ups!

2. I click on one of the backups and can see it named in the browser tab.

3. I can modify the home page with the Advanced Design

However, every time i go edit the content via the Preview tab, i seem to find myself on the live site!

How can i work on the full back up site and change the content???

Hey,

the back up thing only works for the design part as far as I know...

However you can use a litte trick to preview changes to the content as well before puting it live:

Add another language to your shop, that you usually won't use in daily business (e.g. Spanish).
Do your changes there and use the preview link in the top navigation.
If you're done, just copy & paste the HTML code from the right (Spanish) text area to the left one (English) in the data sheet view.

I allways do it that way 😉

I think it is pretty straight forward. However, there's one golden rule which you need to follow. Whenever making changes to your back up copy, you must always select "start quick design" and "start advanced design" from the "My Styles" tab.

Do not select "Quick Design" or "Advanced Design" from the main Design menu. This will always take you to the live site.

You have to go to ->Design ->MY Styles -> create a backup copy of your style, you are using live -> then go to start advanced design of the additional created styles (no the current one visible). You can work on the design and it will not be visible in the live shop.

If you change content it will be visible in the real shop, as content can not be changed seperatly, only colors, navigation elements, etc.
