How do I change a business line to a residential line and keep the number?

In the deepest darkest past my inlaws ended up with a BT business line.

We need to convert to a residential line and keep the line. My inlaws are in their eighties so cannot cope with a change to the number. No business calls go to this line. BT have told my OH that this can only happen if we change the number (and sign up to a new contract).

Does anyone know how to sort this? Can I change to another landline provider?
