BT Versatility - Group divert to external number not working.......

I have BT versatility installed with 2 analogue PSTN catridges (4 lines)

All phones are in Group 1

incoming calls to group 1 rings all 5 local hand sets.

I have enabled all external diverts for all externsions in (programming, > extensions > external divert)

I enable group divert on one of the handsets to divert all calls to an external number, by entering a 9 and the number. the divert is set and all phones now display the group divert notification.

But when calls arrive at the pstn, the phones continue to ring and not divert to the external number...

where am i going wrong ???
