I am having constant problems since using BT's Business 2Wire 2700 Hub. They replaced this for me but Im still having problems, BT says theres no fault with the lines so I am wondering if it is possible to buy a netgear router for example and use this instead ? Can I put my login details into a Netgear or Belkin router and it will auto download the rest of the settings ? Is this possible at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Phil

There is no reason why you can't use a router of your own choosing, Sully316. Do make sure that it is ADSL2+ compatible. Here are some examples from the BT Shop:

BT Shop ADSL Routers

Sully no matter what router you use you will be having issue, BT was trying to follow ntl/virgin into the broadband arena and rather that get its dial network 100%, they have taken short cut to concentrate on broadband and messing up big time.

I've change to 3 different routers and still i can get my internet working properly, in one day i have had well over 100 drops, but BT keeps telling me, there is no issue with my line and broadband. Ive been having issues since April, put it like that, my business phone line is so bad, ive got to keep it on constant divert, just so that I do not feel like there is a fax on the line.

Thanks for this thread Sully,

We have been experiencing disconnects and extremely slow connection speeds for many months and bT have completely failed to help us. After reading your post we went and bought a non-BT router and now everything works fine! We have been told that there is a known fault with the BT 2WIRE router and it is not compatible with internet explorer!

Hi there, Im glad things are working again for you.

We were running Firefox so I agree with John that I cannot see how this is a problem, I personally think there is a problem with the BT business hubs, and we are both proof of the pudding. The most annoying thing is the hours you spend on the phone trying to resolve an issue, and I mean hours , for BT in my case, to say, sorry we have exhausted all options, theres nothing more we can do, try contacting our support staff who charge £25/half an hour who may be able to help you further. Then after £25 spent they told me they dont understand whats happening either. It was only through me thinking what else can I do physically here that I decided to try a different brand router, which hasnt dropped, not even once.

BT need to get there act together.

Without knowing more about your particular issue which seems to have resulted in the suggestion that you call the IT Support manager desk (which does charge for support but provides support for products which are otherwise not supported), I am unable to comment.

A "healthy" and correctly configured BT Business hub will not be the root cause of a dropping connection, we will replace all hubs that are shown to be not functioning correctly.

The BT hub was replaced with a second hub, however the same day after swapping it over we had the same issues of not being able to connect to web pages or receive/send email, yet the broadband and internet light on the router remained lit green, and line tests showed no problems. We had nothing but problems since being told that we had wiring upgrades in our local area and now we had to forget using our BT Versatility broadband module, and now we had to connect via a BT ADSL +2 router, which BT provided, but from then on we had problems for 3 months.

The fact this has come down to the router being the problem, after BT being very persistant this couldnt be the fault as they sent out a second unit and the fault was still happening, to then being told there was nothing more they could do was a complete joke. I am very dissapointed with BT and needless to say when the contract comes up for renewal, I will certainly be looking elsewhere. The main reason we have always stayed with BT, was the thought if we ever had a major issue, that at least BT would be able to sort it, which in this case they havent. It makes you wonder how many other people are having problems with the routers and are spending weeks contacting BT with faults, and here lies a solution that theres a potential major flaw with the outdated looking 2wire routers.

I am sorry that you've had such difficulty, Sully316. Your issue does sound like it has to do with internal wiring. That is to say, what you have connected to the line apart from the Business Hub. In particular, I note that you are a Versatility user. There is a specific helpdesk you should have contacted which deals with Versatility users, did you contact them?

Hi Jon, Im sorry for my rant, i know everyone from BT tried their best to help me.

We did speak to Versatility originally when we were having problems. They then passed us onto BT internet who then told us the broadband module wont work properly after BT have upgraded the wiring in our local area to ADSL +2, and therefore we would need to use a BT hub/router to resolve any issues. Therefore our broadband module was completely bypassed and is now rendered useless. We literally had problems for almost three months until we installed a non BT router which straight away worked, and we have had no problems since. Obviously if it is an internal wiring problem then this should appear again with this Netgear router we have, otherwise all fingers are currently pointing to BT's hubs.

Cheers, Phil

Not necessarily, different routers will have varying sensitivities to the interaction of other equipment on the line. It may be that the Business hub is more sensitive than your Netgear. The fact is, while we test our equipment carefully, in a variety of connection scenarios, we can't cover all bases.

I'm glad you found a solution which works. I am disappointed that we didn't get to the bottom of it.

Sure, the router I have is a Netgear DGN2000 Wireless-N 300 Router with Built-in ADSL2/2+ Modem.

Heres a link to the exact one on Amazon ;

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-DGN2000-Wireless-N-Router-Built-/dp/B001E1UGOE/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1319015415&sr=1-3

They go for about £50-£55ish and its literally plug it in, log in with the deafult passwords it supplies you with then enter your bt email address and password and then away you go. It took about 5 mins to set up, and we straight away noticed an increase in speed on the internet and accessing files on our network.

Best of luck to you.
