Don't know teh answer to a failed appointment charge.

I believe the BT Tech would install a data extension from the master to a new socket which will work but from expereince I would still recommend putting the modem at the master.

Ethernet at 100Mbps will run over a 100m without problems and getting a 40m cable is easy or make one your self.

Hi,

I have BT Infinity being installed at my business premised on Monday (30th Jan). I've just been reading their T and C's and have read something that I just need to check with you good people.

It says that:

"The equipment to provide fibre broadband is connected to the Customer's master telephone socket."

My problem with this is that we have a few lines (fax, phone, alarm & broadband) all coming into the same site but our site is made up of three units which are way more than 30 metres. I've got a niggling feeling that the master telephone socket is in another unit away from all of the computers. I may be wrong as we have a whole heap of telephony equipment in the corner of the office but I'm not sure if this would be counted as the master socket. If BT turn up on Monday and say they can't install it as the master socket is over 30 metres away are they going to impose this part of the T and C's:

"BT reserves the right to raise an abortive visit charge as set out in the Charges Schedule if the engineer attends on Site and finds that the loaction and/or environment provided by the Customer for the BT Equipment and/or Customer Equipment is not suitable"?

Thanks all for your help!

Everyone will be different but from the limited information you have given.

You might want the equipment close to you, but the incoming line master may be a significant distance away. If, it is like a lot of small sites I would suggest that you have the MODEM installed close to the master socket - that will reduce any potential pick up of locally generated "noise" or interference which could reduce the speed.

Then, purchase from a suitable supplier a long Ethernet cable and connect that from the modem to where you want the Hub/Router. Or if you have infrastructue cabliing in place, use that with appropriate patching.

BT can put the extension from master socket to a point 30m away - but it could, as I commented above, degrade the performance.

We have 3 units in a small industrial park and I believe that Unit 3 has the master socket and unit 6 has all the computers. These are way more than 30 metres apart and would need an really long ethernet cable. I just wanted to know if I would be charged for a failed installation more than anything?
