Hi anyone else got a problem witht the new business hub and sending email using iMail on a MacBook Air running on Mac OS X 10.7 ??

We have 3 Mac's, two operating using Outlook that work fine and one using iMail which since the instillation of our new business hub does no longer send email.

The odd thing is that I can receive email and browse the internet.

Nothing wrong with my SMTP settings as the same laptop works fine when at home using a BT Home router and at another address using a Virgin Media router.

All avenues with Apple Genius' and Namesco our server provider explored. As emails work for this account on an iPhone, can still send and receive via web mail and as previously stated at other locations using wirelesss connection, I can only think it is a local environmental issue based on the new BT router.

Just odd that the other two PC's using Outlook instead of iMail work fine?

Any ideas people?

Do you have your own domain name or are you using a btconnect email address?

If you are using your own domain name you would need to get mail relay setup with BT to be abe to send via their servers.

Domain name. It is all the same settings & equipment I had before. The old BT router worked fine. This one just doesn't like Apple software I guess!

Me thinks it is a bit of a design fault though on the part of BT!!!!

Crazy. I continue to pull out my hair whilst BT claim their router is fine & its not their issue.

I fear my only option is to move companies, we must only be a tiny contract but we still have 3 phone lines and the internet with them so you would think they would want to keep our business.

Shame.

No still not working I am afraid.

Its shocking.

The photogrpher we use at work came on site yesterday, he has a MacBook Pro and also uses iMail and he could not send or receive emails.

I guess I should be grateful therefore that at least I can receive them on my MacBook Air! Yes our iPhones all work as well and interestingly the MacBook's that use Outlook rather than iMail are also fine.

BT claim therefore that their router is fine as it is working and it is therefore an IT related issue and wanted to charge me for someone their end to look at it. This is after I have already assertained through Namesco (my server providor) and through countless Apple Genius' that there is nothing wrong and their router obviously is blocking iMail for some reason.

Fairly fundamental teething problem eh! Dont know what I am going to do, obviously though it is business prohibitive to carry on as I am.

Nightmare.

BT Have confirmed that the HUB 3 does not work properly with the Apple Mail client and Hotmail.

It allows you to receive mail but not send it.

The only solutions they advise are to change email system or dump the HUB 3

Sounds like a reverse path Path MTU Discovery problem to me.

Try setting the MTU on your Mac to 1492, or even 1400 for testing.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2532?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

The BT Hub is pretty useless and shouldn't really be supplied in it's current state as it seems to block Path MTU Discovery (PMTUD). As the PPPOE link they insist on using has an MTU of 1492 this is a big issue.

If this does fix things then I would get think about an alternate router or change the MTU on all devices on the LAN to 1492.

Back again with the same old SENDING EMAIL PROBLEMS with a Mac.

I resolved this problem back in June with help from the BT Business Centre, and now I cant for my life remember how to resolve this issue. Must be my age.

This irritating problem can be fixed, I assure you all. The poroblem with BTwhen you telephone them is their 'attitued'. Telling you that its your settings regarding SMTP or to ring your Hosting providers as its their fault. Bollocks...

Im going to have to look at the FIREWALL and DNS settings within the rauter to see if there is something that stands out.

I will let you know if I sort something out and post my findings this time around.

Regards

Leo

Thanks Dave,

Hi Leo, yeah its quite a strange issue, only affects mail on apple and only on the new hub. It seems to be the way mail searches for the dns.

There's three ways to fix this:

1) Specify dns on the mac: Click the finder icon - apple - system preferences - network - (select either wireless or ethernet) - click advanced - click dns - click the plus - enter two dns servers, i.e. 62.6.40.162 and 194.72.9.34

2) Change the hostname on the router: Open safari - type in the address bar 192.168.1.254 - click settings - enter your password, click advanced settings - continue to advanced settings - business network and rename your mac in the network to something with one word and no puntuation, i.e rename unknown45:ae:01:ee to "Mac" or "laptop".

3) Change the name of the mac:

Open a Terminal window and enter the following command "scutil --set HostName newhostname" replace newhostname with whatever you wish to call the Mac. Use the following requirements, it must begin with a letter and can contain letters and numbers. Try to keep it under 64 characters as well.
• Click on the Apple icon, then System Preferences. In there, should be an option called Sharing. If not there will be a show all button at the top, click this, then click Sharing.
• In the window this brings up click Edit
• In the window this brings set the Local Hostname field to contain the exact same thing you set the hostname to in the terminal
• Back into the System Preferences page and click on Network
• Select the Location option at the top and in the menu that pops up click Edit Locations
• Click the plus button and give the new location any name.
• Once this is done the computer may loose all connectivity. If using Wi-Fi click on the Wifi option on the left of the network pane and it should reconnect to the network without having to re-enter security keys or anything.
• If using Ethernet, it might just work, make sure Ethernets selected on the left and check through the advanced options, try doing DHCP release and renew etc.

Option 1 should work fine as long as the settings are not changed in future and BT do not retire the particular dns server you use.

Option 2 will work for the hostname you change (although may require a reboot) on the router it is connected too (if you connect to another hub 3 the hostname would need to be updated again).

Option 3 - (apple support should be able to help set this up if you are uncomfortablemaking the changes) should work for any connection as the issue primarily lies with the hostname on the machine. Ensure there is no punctuation or spaces in the hostname.

Thanks,

Steve
