I currently have the 40/20 infinity service and have ordered the upgrade to 80/40.

The business hub 3.0 arrived this morning ahead of the line "unlocking" and I need to know if I have to use this hub.

I currently have the openreach echolife HG612 - 2B modem going into my Neatgear prosafe FVS336GV2 firewall as I find the BT provided hubs flaky at best and seriously annoying when trying to keep 50+ users happy on interwebs.

I would ideally like to continue using the Netgear, so is this possible?

All information welcomed.

thanks

If it is working on the 40Mbps service then it should work fine on the upgraade top 80Mbps.

80/40 - are you sure? Check it.

Actually i think i meant 80/20 good spot.

yes on this issue I found a reference on the netgear website that says that the FVS336GV2 can only do a LAN to WAN throughput of 60mbps maximum.

So it would appear im going to be using the 3.0 hub and hope for the best.

Thanks again.

Yes the netgear is a very good device, simple to configure and just works.

Having the 60mpbs limit is pretty poor for the netgear it was not the cheapest firewall at the time I bought it, so much for future proof.

I was told by BT to expect 77meg down, and perhaps the 3.0 hub is stable enough.

I will give the 3.0 a good test, as one thing I will note is that the netgear cannot assign more than 1 static address, I have a block of 5 static IP's and it will be good to get some use out of them again.

If you like the Netgear, then you could investigate connecting it to the BT hub. The BT hub can deal with 5 static IPs and direct traffic to the appropriate devices connected directly. All of your users would still connect via the Netgear.

Ok to update this thread on the business hub 3.0

The hub itself can assign multiple public IP addresses, but ONLY to devices that the hub has given a DHCP address too. I cant stress how annoying it it to have statically assigned local "windows servers" IP addresses that cannot be given a public address on the business hub, this has been the case from all the 2wire adsl devices and now the 3.0 hub as well.

When you have a windows assigned local 192. address it will not appear in the list of clickable devices in the business hub under - Settings -> Advanced settings -> Business Network.

however after a long chat on BT support with the Infinity team I was able to confirm that static public addresses can be assigned on the computer itself, (support did not appear to have any knowledge that you can assign multiple IP addressed to the same network card in a PC.) but I got enough information that was useful for my setup.

when I want to assign a public IP address, I do it as a second IP or assign it to a second NIC in the computer I want to be "public".

This is fine for now, but shows a lack of a useful feature, that may force me to look at another manufacturers kit for the infinity connection in the future.

Incidentally I was able to wire the Netgear FVS336GV2 into one of the LAN ports on the 3.0 hub and that works fine, again I would note that I can only get a speedtest result of 33mbps through the netgear firewall im guessing due to the devices specs, whereas when I run direct through the 3.0 hub I get a speedtest result of 60 sometimes 77mbps down.

Re: Do I need to use the business hub 3.0? - workaround for Port Forward

Thanks for this post. After upgrading from ADSL to Infinity (Fibre) I had a similar issue but with a Buffalo router instead of a Netgear behind the BH3.0 and with the Windows server behind that.

I solved the problem of port-forwarding to the Windows server by allowing the Buffalo to pick up a DHCP address from the BH3.0 so that it appeared in the Port Forwarding device list as AIRSTATION and assigned that as the destination for HTTPS, SMTP and other ports. The config. of the Buffalo did not have to change since it was already doing its own port forwarding to the LAN address of the Windows server.

I'm not quite clear from your 'solved' post how you managed the port forwarding to a non-DHCP address.
