Hi,

You don't mention the make and model of the routers, so much of this would be guesswork.

- Did you set the correct username and password in the router? This is important, as that is what the system uses to determine your profile.

- What is the SnR Margin showing in the router stats? A level below 3 dB or above 12 dB is a bad thing, as the signal is either too weak or too strong. Some routers deal with out of range SnR margins better than others though.

- Is the connection staying stable? In theory if your sync rate is high then it should, but it's best to check.

- Did you change the microfilter and cabling when you changed the router? I once had a problem where by broadband wouldn't connect with new router plus old filter, but when I connected up with a filter that came with the new one it worked fine.

- Do you use any extension cables between the router and master socket? If you do then take them off and plug it right in to the master? (Assuming you don't have a test socket as per the next point)

- Do you have a master socket with a test socket (also known as an NTE5)? If you do then trying opening up the small panel on the bottom of the socket and plug the microfilter into that.

There's a start for you.

I have today switched from an old ADSL modem router and acquired a new router. I am getting incredibly slow internet connection speeds as a result of the switch. I am curious if it could be due to a slow down caused by numerous reconnections inline with trying to set up the new router ie increased noise, or if it is some other setting?

My BT test results are here...

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1.04 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 21.37 Mbps

2.

The SNR Is

Line Attenuation

6.5 db

3.2 db

Noise Margin

14.8 db

7.2 db

New filter installed. I feel that it maybe caused by numerous resets over a short period of time which has triggered the issues. My line is normally rated at 21mbps or there abouts. I have read about an SNR reset which may cure this or just simply waiting over time should resolve the issue. Line speeds already seem to have increased. Perhaps I'll just switch off over night and wait until the morning and report back. Sorry im really not very technically minded - we are a small business and do not warrant having a dedicated IT professional!

My IP profile on the BT speedtester is now saying 13.48mb as opposed to the 22 odd i was getting prior to the switch?!

Thank you DaveA for your very quick reply and helpful tips!

Regards,

John

It's a Negear DGN2200. Noise readings are now..

Hi,

No problem.

The noise margins are going through the floor though, which is a bad thing. A download margin of 1.2 is well below the minimum we would expect on a normal line.

I think it's Helpdesk time for you - 0845 600 7020, which is open 24/7.

Try another router first though if you can, and bear in mind that the Helpdesk can't support third party routers like yours.
