Hi,

I recently got a BT Business Hub 3 (as a free upgrade - thank you BT!). Much smaller than the HGV2700 and installed no problem.

With ANY new network kit I always check it out on GRC Shields Up! Port 161 (SNMP) was wide open! There is huge debate about this over on the BT Home forums where people are not happy about the Home Hub 3 leaving open this port (and Port 4567 apparently).

Should I be worried that this port is open (as far as I am aware there is nothing my side of the firewall running SNMP) rather than stealthed?

Should I use port forwarding to stealth this port?

Any help / advice appreciated.

SNMP is always open by default. I found this opened at Netgear routers too. This makes it possibly to set up a monitoring system like Opennms without a hassle.

You can always close this port whenever you don't need to monitor this.

Hi,

From what I have read about it you should close it unless you use it yourself. Unfortunately I don't have any information as to why it's open in the first place.
