problems linking a page - my last one as well!!

When I first started putting my site together (early Feb I think) I had problems linking pages on my site. Well, someone kindly told me what to do, eg

http://www.sitename/docname.htm

I did this for about 10 pages and it worked fine. I clicked on the URL button in the menu editor, clicked on the 'opens in new window' radio button, typed in the http: address and they all linked fine to the pages in my C drive (which are Word documents that have been saved also as Web pages).

Anyway. Two months down the line, I have one more page. It's 137kb compared to my other averages of 40kb. It's a HTM page. I type in the document name correctly, and the other address details. Any whenever I go to Preview on the ESW and select that page, I get a 404 code - page cannot be found. I've tried deleted the document and starting again, from scratch, several times over. But I keep getting the same problem.

Can anyone shed any light on this. This last problem is the only thing stopping me from publishing the site (pressing the Publishing button).

Please make sure that you have the case correct as the server is case sensitive. Eg, if the file is called Example.htm and the hyperlink is looking for example.htm then this will result in a 404 error.

Another poster was caught out by this a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Eve

I have looked into your account and your right. The page is giving a 404 error. However, I have looked into your ftp site and did not see the file TaxRates.htm. Please ensure that this file is uploaded into the /public directory. Also note that it is case sensitive.

Once you do this, it should be working fine

I wish I could have logged on earlier!! I do have a file called TaxRates with the relevant documents in it. It's on my C drive along with all the other pages I've attached to the site. I don't know where else to put them.

This last one is driving me nuts. It's so frustrating to be this close to launching but not be able to because of this one error.

I did everything the same as the other attached pages, except I did those ones several weeks ago, and this last one only in the last week or so. How can you see my FTP files when they are on my C drive. Are they copied elsewhere in the BT system? I've never used any other FTP thing(!). Do they automatically upload somewhere?

Anyway, I'm no closer to resolving this issue. I'll keep going round in circles like the other night. Perhaps I should contact the BT helpdesk again. I spoke with them a few nights ago, at 2am and they were quite helpful, but we thought the problem was a mismatch of names but it wasn't. I was using the exact same case/name etc. I treble checked it each time, but still no joy.

Help...! All the techie stuff really is way over my head.

Here's some screenshots (sorry it wouldn't let me do that, so here's copy of text in menu editor:

I've selected the URL icon, and ticked the 'open in a new window' box.

Here's what my C drive looks like:

folder name: FTP files:

contains lots of little yellow folders, and one is: TaxRates_files

Then I have in the FTP files folder:

the corresponding Word document

and the corresponding HTML document

both just called TaxRates.doc or .HTM

I cannot figure out what's going wrong.

From what you are saying, it looks like you are linking to a file which the hyperlink implies is in your webspace, but in reality it is actually sitting on your hard drive. Is this correct?

If this is the case, you will need to upload the file to your webspace so that other people can see it.

If you are not sure how to do this with FTP, then this is how to do it using the file manager in the website centre:

In the left pane (source dir) double click on public <dir> to open the public folder.
Click the browse button, then find the file and select it
Click the upload button to transfer this file to the public directory.

Now make sure the file can be accessed at http://www.esnresources.co.uk/TaxRates.htm
