My email is set up for mail relay, i.e. email forwarded to a non BT hosted server is collected and received when I fire up Outlook and check for new mail. But this doesn't seem to work if I am out of my office and use BT web mail. Are there some settings I need to make to allow this to happen.

Thanks for the explanation, it clears things up a lot....
OK with your current setup no, you can not send out using the BT Business Webmail via your domain name email address.
However if you have one of the BT Business Web Hosting packages or paid for email packages then you can have what BT Business calls "Mail Only" setup, that is where you repoint your domains MX record to the BT business Mail Server and they handle all your email as if they host your domain. Once this is setup you will be able to setup a default email address in the portal that can be something@yourdomain.com, so every time you use the BT Business Webmail it is send out using your domain email address.
If that is something you would like to look into further then the Techincal Helpdesk can advise on this and pass you through to the Domain Name Services Team to have this enabled.

Mail Relay means something slightly different within BT Business in that it is were BT Business allow you to send mail through their mail servers from a non BT hosted domain.
What you are referring to is running your own mail server (correct me if I am wrong), where your mail server collects and sends your email.
This setup would be separate from the BT Business Outlook Webmail as you are not using a BT Business email account (@btconnect.com).
Perhaps if you could clarify your email setup in a little more detail I would be able to better understand your issue and provide a solution.

OK, just to clarify. I have a business website which is hosted by another ISP - not BT. With this host I have an email address to which mail is sent.
I also have the BT Broadband service which I use for the ourpose of using the internet. I have an email address - my primary email address as BT calls it where other personal mail is sent.
For convenience, I have set up a BT email account to pick up mail sent to the business host, which is what I have rightly or wrongly called mail relay. this works just fine using Outlook as the mail client.
My question therefore was, if I am not in my office, connected to BT via the ADSL line, could I have the same set-up, i.e. by using BT web mail to collect mail sent to both my primary email address (this woks ok) as well as the other mail address.
Thanks for replying
