Problems with btconnect e-mail with iPhone

Hi - can anybody help with an ongoing problem using my e-mail on my new iPhone.

On my PC I am using Outlook Express and can happily send and receive e-mails. Setting up the iPone to send and receive e-mails has been very difficult despite diligently replicating all account settings.

Finally I can receive e-mails but still cannot send any - receiving the error message "The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.btconnect.com" failed". All settings are exactly replicated as per Outlook express."

Therefore if using iPhone to send e-mail via btconnect.com address do I need different SMTP address or port settings.

Any help appreciated!

Re: Problems with btconnect e-mail with iPhone

smtp settings are correct but O2 uses a different smtp gateway. Check with O2 for the correct relay settings.
- mobile operators force cellular phone users to use a common gateway via which all emails are relayed across. chances are that this will need to be entered here rather than the btconnect smtp address.

Re: Problems with btconnect e-mail with iPhone

I hope this helps someone.

After quite a bit of trial and error, I finally managed to configure my iPhone with my btconnect email, and did it by using the POP server option.

I input the following info:

Incoming mail server:

host name: pop.btconnect.com

user name: <username>@btconnect.com

password: <btconnect password>

Outgoing mail server:

host name: smtp.o2.co.uk

user name: <o2username as provided by o2 via iPhone message>

password: <o2 password as provided by o2 via iPhone message>

This gives me my btconnect inbox, but not sent items and it does not sync the contacts unfortunately...

Re: Problems with btconnect e-mail with iPhone

You will never manage to sync the sent items and contacts using a POP3 connection.

If you have an Organise and Share account, you can do it using the Exchange server.

See this post for how to set it up

Note, this guide assumes the WiFi/GPRS/3G has been configured correctly on the iPhone.

Edit an existing POP3 account on iPhone:

Details are accessed by EU clicking on:

Settings on the iPhone springboard (aka desktop, home screen), then

Mail, Contacts, Calendars then

Select the BTconnect account on the list displayed (if no accounts exist, see bottom section to add).

POP Account information:

Name: Customer Name

Address: customerusername@btconnect.com

Description: (e.g.) POP3 BTconnect mail

Incoming mail server:

Host name: pop3.btconnect.com

Username: customerusername (omit '@btconnect.com')

Password: customerpassword

Outgoing Mail server: smtp.btconnect.com (tap this option for the info below)

Primary server: smtp.btconnect.com (no other SMTP servers switched on)

Other SMTP servers: <none>

NOTE: If connection to the primary SMTP is down or incorrect, the iPhone can & will use any SMTP servers it has listed as 'Other SMTP servers' on this screen, if they are switched to ON. For duration of testing all 'Other SMTP servers' should be switched OFF.

Click on Primary Server

(e.g. smtp.btconnect.com)

Host Name: smtp.btconnect.com

Username: customerusername@btconnect.com (include '@btconnect.com')

Password: customerpassword

Use SSL: Off

Authentication: Password

Server port: 25 (iPhone may try & default this to 587 if an aborted IMAP setup has taken place).

NOTE: SMTP authentication MUST be enabled to allow customer to send email on the move. A solution whereby SMTP Authentication is disabled will NOT work when EU is away from their BT Business broadband.

Advanced:

Deleted messages: Remove after one week

------

Incoming settings:

Use SSL: Off

Authentication: Password

Delete from server: Never

Server Port: 110

====================

To ADD a new account to the iPhone:

Click on Settings on the iPhone springboard (aka desktop, home screen)

Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars

Select Add account... on the list displayed.

Choose Other...

Enter your account information:

Name: Customer Name

Address: customerusername@btconnect.com

Password: customerpassword

Description: (e.g.) POP3 BTconnect mail

Click Save, iPhone will move to next screen...

Select POP & move down to:

Incoming mail server:

Host name: pop3.btconnect.com

Username: customerusername (omit '@btconnect.com')

Password: customerpassword

Then

Outgoing Mail server:

Host Name: smtp.btconnect.com

Username: customerusername@btconnect.com (include '@btconnect.com')

Then click Save

The iPhone will then try & verify the POP settings via SSL & will fail. This is normal.

iPhone will then report Cannot connect using SSL, Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL? Click YES

iPhone will then try & reverify POP details, this may take up to 3mins!

Note: Even if the information provided is correct the iPhone may display a message saying the SMTP account verification failed, authentication not supported. Ignore this & click Save. A warning will be displayed: This account may not be able to send or receive email. Are you sure you want to save? Click Save

If successful you will then be back to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars settings screen.

(If the POP3 or SMTP verification failed, check the POP3 & SMTP details again, SMTP password WILL need to be re-entered if SMTP verification failed).

Click Home button (on the front, below the screen)

Launch Mail from springboard, choose BTconnect account if multiple selections are available.

Test by sending/receiving.

(If still not working, iTunes can force email accounts from the iPhones' host PC/Mac, however this is outwith the scope of this guide & should only be performed by persons familiar with this procedure as it can be destructive to data on the iPhone).

Thanks to KateWinsletsHT for this guide,
