Transfer .com domain and email to BT

sandypaul44

Hi,

Can someone help please.

Our company has both hosting and domain registered with 123-reg.co.uk

Taking advantage of BT's Phone and Broadband package which includes hosting we want to transfer domain from 123 to BT.

Our MD wants to ensure smooth transition of email addresses and to that no emails go missing.  Reading some of the forum posts this process doesn't sound too smooth.

Anyone have any suggestions to prevent emails going missing during the transfer.

Thanks very much

Sandy Paul

Hi Sandy Paul,

Sorry for the delay.  Yes that would be the case an email should be sent to the admin email address and the primary btconnect.com address, you may notice at this point that you have stopped receiving emails, so you may notice at that point.

The only downtime in option 2 would be when you changed the MX records, but it shouldn't be too long and because its a manual change you can choose when to do it, e.g. in the evening when you're not expecting too much email.

BT's technical support team could help with option 2, but you would need to take the relevant MX records to your old host to implement, we can provide the records, but it needs to be updated on the old hosts systems, but they should be able to help with that.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Sandy Paul,

There's a few things to take into consideration in regards to a .com transfer, firstly ensure your domain has been with your currect provider for more than 60 days, if not you will be unable to transfer it, secondly, if you have a website ensure you have a copy of it as this will not be moved automatically.

There are then two ways to proceed with the transfer, you can either call your provider and ask them to unlock the domain name, obtain the authcode, also check that you have access to the admin email address for your domain name, then go to http://myoffice.bt.com click - manage services - login - domains - transfer a domain name to BT, enter the authcode and follow the instructions.

Once this has been done, check your admin email address and approve the transfer from this point the transfer is an automated process and can take between 5 and 30 days, average is 7 (governing body rules).

In terms of keeping email going during this period there are two options:

1)  Continue the email service with the current provider and when the transfer completes the email will stop until you can create the addresses on BT's systems, this should only take 10 minutes.

2)  Before you start the transfer login to your account at myoffice.bt.com, goto domains - use external domain name with bt services, try to create an email address under email, you will then receive an email with two MX records and an A record for webhosting, take these to your current provider and ask them to add these to your domain name.

Once this has been done, log back into your BT account, goto domains, confirm ownership of the external domain, create the email addresses you need under "email".  Go to webhosting, activate the hosting pack, then upload the website.

Then you would start the transfer process as started above, the email and web services would then be with BT before the transfer starts.

Thanks,

Hi Steve,

Thanks very much for your reply.

The first bit sounds fine as we have had the domain at our current provider for more than 60 days.  I am able to unlock the domain and have the admin email address and will be able to generate the authorisation code.

The transfer of a domain to BT sounds the easiest option.  Will we then get an automated email to our admin email address at BT to advise us that the transfer has happened and to set up our email addresses? So it would be a matter of continually checking the admin email address with BT to await word of transfer then immediately set up emails on BT's server? Although the easiest option it sounds like this might result in some loss of emails between the time we notice the transfer has gone through and setting up again of emails.

Option 2 if I'm correct sounds like there would be no down time in emails but is a bit trickier to follow through.  I would probably need help from BT's technical desk to implement the necessary steps. Is there no loss of emails in option 2 and will BT's technical team help me?

Thanks very much for your help.  I appreciate it.

this may be a bit late but we have 3 domain names hosted by BT and the problem we have is that when we are outside the UK, we can only send emails with the btconnect.com email address.

this is confusing for our customers and we are trying to find a solution outside BT.  a VPS may be the way to go.

If you are using a mail client you can set up the reply address on your bt connect account to your domain account so when your customer's receive your email it'll show as sent from your domain address. As for not being about to send using your domain accounts it could be that your ISP is blocking port 587 for outgoing mail. Check to see if they can open that port for you.
