Iphone connection to server through BTBusiness Hub 2Wire

I haven't been able to connect my Iphone to our server for emails. I have been through the Iphone email connection setup many times but it just keeps saying "cannot get mail - the connection to the server failed". Our IT guys say that they can see that it should work and one says that he could see that the Iphone was getting to the Hub but no further and that it was probably a port issue on the hub re ActiveSync but he couldn't see how to allow the outward mail to get through the Hub despite trying.
Contacted BT who at first said that all ports were open as necessary for the Iphone but when I insisted that the issue was with the Hub they went through a process to allow Iphone application TCP on port 990. They said it should now work, but it still doesn't. Any help would be appreciated. I am not an IT buff!
