BT Business Hub with Wireless Extender - Windows 7 Connectivity and Download Speed Issues

I wonder if anyone can help.
I have a BT Business Hub, a BT2700HGV running firmware 5.29. The range is not quite enoough to reach parts of our house and Ethernet cable/other methods aren't that practical so I extended the wireless range using an Edimax Range Extender.
With Android, iOS and Linux devices they connect directly to the Edimax and everything works fine. Unfortunately devices running Microsoft Windows 7 fail to get internet access when connected to the Edimax, the problem is better described here;
Because of this problem I have to leave the W7 devices connected directly to the BT Business Router - but when I do that and connect from an area of the house with a weak signal, the download speed dives from an average 5MB/sec to more like 300-500K per second. If I switch off the Edimax and wait a minute, speeds are back up to normal (though range is once again poor).
Thus the two problems compound each other - if I extend the range I can use Android tablets and Smartphones but the W7 laptops crawl to a standstill. If I turn the extender off the W7 laptop works OK but other more mobile devices keep dropping out of range.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix either of these problems? The W7 'No Internet Access' issue seems only to happen with 2Wire routers, could I replace the BT Business Hub with something else? If so any recommendations?
Or is there any way of configuring either the BT Business Hub or the range extender so that the download speeds from the hub are not affected when the range extender is switched on? All help gratefuly received.

Hi. The W7 computer, what is the wireless card manufacturer and is the driver already updated to the latest? It is possbile that the router is broadcating using wireless "N" but the Windows can't quite get the signal.
