BT Versatility System and Broadband

Hi,

we've recently taken over a guesthouse/hotel which has a telephone system installed throughout. After doing some research I think its a BT Versatility system that is installed.  could someone please confirm this from the picture below?

We have recently looked to get Internet installed for our own use and also our Guests as we have been using a mobile dongle.  I Called BT who said we could sign up to a business broadband package and they would activate our line and send us the BT Business Hub.  We have now recieved the Hub and confirmation that our line has been activated but I can't get the internet to work.  I'm guessing that because of the system installed its not just as easy as connecting the Hub to one of the lines that allows external calls.

Can anyone help?  Do I need the broadband module for the versatility system and configure it that way or is there a way i can connect the hub to the current system thats installed.

Thanks, Leighton.

Yes that is a Versatility system. How many lines are connected to it? Assuming broadband is activated on one of the lines, the connection to the versatility needs to be from the filtered side of the broadband. Just use the BT Hub better bet than the broadband module.

Hi, Thanks for replying.

We have one phone number for the hotel/restaurant but then have 12 internal lines (a phone in each room, kitchen and bar)

Broadband is meant to be activated on the line and I assume you mean i need to connect the hub into the master socket using the filter and then run a line from the filter to the versatility system.  The only problem i currently have is that I'm struggling to find the master socket.  Is it possible that the phone line could be wired straight into the versatility system?

Looking at your photograph there is a grey connection box underneath the patch panel, this could be a local BT distribution point, I also notice that there is a red/red& white wire going from this box to the versatility which could well be your line connection. I don't know what the situation is with BT for fitting a master socket retrospectively whether it would be chargeable or not.

I would say that the master socket should be fitted free of charge because you have been sold a service, namely Broadband, which you cannot access!

I got up into the attic eariler and traced the main BT cable coming in to the white box under the distribution unit.

The main cable goes straight into the terminal block within this and there is no Master Socket.  I've today fitted a Master socket, pluged the broadband filter in, connected the router and the internet is now working.  I've then run a cable from the phone line on the filter to the box under the distribution board where the main cable went in.  Everything is now working exactly as it should.  Thanks for the help you have all given.

Next on my agenda is to run an extension from the master socket to the reception area as the card reader keeps loosing connection on the socket it is plugged into.  🙂
