BT Versatility - Voicemail doesn't kick in if phone not answered

Hi
We have three handsets, all set up to divert to individual voicemails if phone not answered, 'Press 1 for Ernie, press 2 for Bert.......etc etc. I am number 3 and mine is not working, the other 2 do work. BT won't have anything to do with it because we don't have a maintenance contract with them so I wondered if anyone might have the solution?
