Broadband speed still slower than neighjbours

A major telephone line fault, involving replacement of a 50-pair cable, was completed at the beginning of December (after downtime of one month!). Our broadband speed has recovered to 2.35Mb/s but this is still slower than with the old, damaged cable before the fault went critical (typically as much is 3.8Mb/s after earlier BT engineers' improvements).

What's more, neighbours get speeds of 5 or 6Mb/s. We are paying for a business line and service. I have just had an online chat concerning this issue, only to be told that the line is fine and giving the best stable speed that it can – end of chat.

This is not good enough. Much faster speeds are obviously achievable even at this distance from the exchange and we feel justified in demanding the same standard of service as our neighbours. What can be done?

Hi,

No two phone lines are the same, and in theory the Helpdesk could be right.  There are many factors apart from cable length that can affect broadband speed, and it's impossible to legislate for them all.

If you're not happy then go back to the helpdesk and get them to escalate the issue.  There's no guarantee that they'll be able to make it better, but you can try.

Thanks, Dave,

I'll give it another try. There are evidently good wires between here and the exchange and I'd rather have one of the good ones than the dodgy ones. I had hoped the new cable would make a real improvement, not result in a poorer line than before.
