Connection Type

I have been suffering with very slow webpage connection issues.  The line speed is good, getting up to 13,000 but pages 'sit' for ages waiting to connect. Checking the support information it says to check I have a PPPoE connection type but mine is set ( presumably automatically as I did not set it ) to PPPoA.  I tried to reset to PPPoE but then get an error message "The selected ATM Encapsulation is not compatable with this connection type".  What should the ATM Capsulation be set to and is this a likely cause of my problem?

Hi Dave.  Thanks for the thoughts. I feel I am close to a solution but it might be useful to try a direct IP address access.  Not sure how to do that but I guess I can just get it from a page I'm in.  What I've found is that I used to use ONSPEED before I upgraded to a 20 MB connection and have just found that this adjusts the LAN settings to a fixed access address. I've now changed it to automatically detect settings and things seem faster. I guess it might need a reboot to finish things and that's the next step. There might be some other 'residue' to be found so I will continue digging later today when I have some time....

Hi Mike,

Using the IP is easy, although you would need to use a lookup tool to get it.  Something like Network Tools would do.

All you would then need to do is type http://xx.xx.xx.xx in the address bar instead of the normal address.

🙂

Cheers,

OK.  I did try an IP access and it still seemed to take a long time. One thing I probably should have added before is that Business Broadband help keeps telling me I have connection problems and selecting Fix just launches IE 9 and a menu without doing anything to fix it..... this launch is normally 2 desktop help windows at a time - although the latest 'help' has actually resulted in a 'This program cannot display the webpage' message.
