Does anyone know if it's possible to have a custom 404 page?

Any ideas would be helpful!

Cheers

Hey Dave - it only bloody works!!!  I've been reading up on all these convoluted theories about how you shouldn't edit the .htaccess file if you're running the FP extensions because things get broken - and you won't be able to publish to the site.  But I've just followed your instructions and it's fine.  Just typed mydomain/carrots.htm - and I have my lovely customised "Not Found" page looking back at me.  Marvelous!

So just to recap everyone.  You CAN display a customised 404 page using FrontPage by editing the .htaccess file via an application called "Putty".  Just follow Dave's steps above.Smiley Very Happy

Hi Hochiki,

Glad to hear that it worked for you. The command line stuff really isn't that scary once you get the hang of it Smiley Very Happy

Hi,

Probably a stupid question but where will I find the "host name as provided by the website centre"?

We're using the Business Internet Pack, but there's nothing like the example "shell2c31.carrierzone.com". Having looked around the website centre I can't see an address.

Thanks.

Having tried to look up the server address I get "hostedc31.carrierzone.com", in the United States.

However putty times out when using this address - what am I missing?

Thanks

SSH is only available on the Advanced Hosting Pack so you won't be able to use Putty to connect in this way.

Are you sure you need to use SSH? Are you using Frontpage Extensions which are preventing normal FTP access?

Hi Dave, That makes sense.

Having tried without using putty my custom 404 page is there and displays perfectly.

Thanks for your help.

hi

i phoned BT Support to get hold of the host name, but they were unable to help - i now realise that as i only have standard hosting i won't be able to access the .htaccess file anyway.

is there another way to get to it?

Hi Richard,

Which hostname are you looking for? The one for FTP or for SSH?

Can you advise specifically what you are trying to do and I can probably help further.

Dave,

I am trying to create a custom 404 page.  My old provider obvoiusly had the 404 thing already done as I only had to create a custom page called 'notfound'.

I have access to FTP no problem (I uploaded my new site this morning).

From the posts I don't think i will be able to access via SSH

Can you help?

Richard,

All you will need to do in that case is upload the .htaccess file using the same FTP details that you used this morning. The SSH mentioned earlier is only needed when FTP is disabled on the account.

The hostname for FTP will simply be your domain name.
