False BT Openzones?

Hi I was wondering if someone could please shed some light...

As I walk around I see many SSID's called BTOpenzone, I am on an Orange iPhone so have Openzone access that way, I am also a Business and Residential BT customer so should have access to ALL Openzone and Fon hotspots.

So when in places like Starbucks I am able to access the BTOpenzone, however there are many BTOpenzones that I am able to connect to get full wifi signal strength but still not able to get internet or even a login page, just a no internet warning.

I have also noticed that our BT Business Hub is broadcasting a BTOpenzone SSID which I can't seem to access either, is this the same issue, are people unwittingly broadcasting false Openzone ID's?

Thanks in advance. B

I remember this being an issue a few months back.  Have a look here for info.

As many are aware the distance between your mobile deivice and the wifi access point can cause difficulites the further that they are separated - that's the normal problem

HOWEVER:

where you are getting a strong signal and still being refused access is a bit more worrying, it could be that the BT server is overworked and having a bad day.

OR... and this is more likely

you have just given your OpenZone login credentials to a hacker who is deliberatly mimicing a BT openzone access point.

(sorry I cannot be more specific most forums have strict rules about discussing this sort of thing) would advise changing password regulary
