Files not visible in public folder

The files in my public folder are no longer visible when I access the ftp index through the BT manage website facility. The public folder only has two [parent directory] links with different dates when viewed in IE. I checked the directory with Filezilla and all the files are visible. I haven't uploaded any new files for 3 months so I'm not sure what this means.

I hope someone can enlighten me.

This could be a few things, when you connect to ftp with filezilla do you use the domain name as the host? If that is the case you  may be connecting to a different server than the one you see in the control panel. Check to make sure the public folder in filezilla has an index.htm or index.html or some sort of file for the server to find by default and, if you are using any, disable any .htaccess files temporarily. If you do have an index, or you are trying to access one file specifically (as in domainname.co.uk/filename.htm) then set the permissions to that file to 777, at least temporarily, to see if that is the issue.

Hope one of these options help.

Thanks for the reply. There is an index file showing in Filezilla, but I'm not sure which file(s) you think I should change the permissions. It looks like all the files are set to a default 644.

From what you're describing it sounds like you are seeing two different sets of files when seeing filezilla and your file manager. If the permissions are fine you might need to try using the IP address as the "host" when connecting. This will tell you what is visible on the BT servers. If there are files present when you connect with the IP address to a hosted domain and none visible online then it might mean that your actual domain name is not pointing to our IP's. That would be something you would have to check on with your registrar.

OK, I connected to the IP address using filezilla and one set of files are visible in the public folder, but there are still no files visible through the BT ftp manager.

I have a second domain with BT (both registered through BT) and I checked it as well. The public folder on the second domain is empty as I don't use it. I originally hosted what is now my primary domain through the older domain, but now have them as separate entities.

My only concern about this is that I don't want to jeopardise the file scanning of the search engines.

I don't think you need to worry about the search engines in this case. If you can see the files in filezilla while using the IP, and the site loads, the search engines should be able to read it properly. It sounds like the issue is with the ftp tool on your control panel.
