General questions about web host management, WordPress and changing NameServers

robcub3

I am redesigning a website for a client who is using BTBusiness for their domain name registration, web hosting and bespoke email.

They have given me just their email address xxx@btconnect.com and password and with that I can go into BT Website Centre however I don't seem to be able to FTP with an FTP client. The File Manager in Website Management is ... kind of basic!

I would like to install WordPress and, as I can see this is possible from another thread here, it seems unadvisable to me as I can't see MySQL database set up or PHPMyAdmin.

I see you're running PHP but do you have the mod_rewrite module running?

So, more importantly, how can you change the NameServers so that they point to another host (which can deal with WordPress better) whilst keeping the email management with BT?

Many thanks.

Without the domain name I can only answer some of those questions. The user name and host name you would use to FTP are both your domain name. Your password should be the same one you use to login to the control panel. You can see if the package you are on has mysql database capabilities by checking in the control panel under Website Management for a Database Manager. This will allow you to create a database or get the connection settings for an existing database. Also you can set up a mod_rewrite in an .htaccess file if you need one.

Thank you, duskjome, the domain name is delmamss dot co.uk - I still can't login with a FTP client using that as the server and username but not to worry.

Under website management I have only

» Site Promoter
» File Manager
» PHP Manager

» Site Checker

I have also heard back from support saying that they would need to upgrade to the Advanced Hosting at £15 per month for this option.

So I would like to know where I change the NameServers for the domain name but keeping the email with BT.

In the same email from Support he says

"With regards to changing the nameservers, this can be done but the new host would need to set the MX record to ibmr.btconnect.com in order to keep using the BT email system. If you want to do this, please submit the support form 'titled DNS name server repoint'"

Where do I get this form?
