Linking to an external database

Hi im currently trying to set up a new joomla site on basic buisness web plan. I have my own database set up with another provider, but can not get the site to link to the database. I have tested the database from another location and that works so i know its configured properly from the database side. I also allowed access of the site ip through my database cpanlel to access the database but it still will not link. Can anyone help ?

Have your site checked by BT. They might have additional set up for your site to link properly to your database.

Have you checked your user name and password? Please  make sure that user name and password are given correctly.
