Just to close this topic from my standpoint - it really does seem that time and patience is the key.  My site has now started to appear on Google searches some 4 or 5 days after I submitted the site and sitemap and verified my ownership.  I guess that I had expected instant response from Google and this expectation is clearly unrealistic.

Did you make any progress with your Google problem?  I notice that I can get lots of links when I carry out a Google site: search on your domain name.

I am in a similar, probably worse, position.  I have a prototype eShop, qgifts.co.uk, stocked with a few products, but I am loathe to put my full range in until I can get some recognition from Google.  Google have verified my site after I put their HTML insert into the head section, and I have submitted a sitemap - but when I carry out a site: search my domain name is not recognised, no matter what combination of www, eshop and qgifts.co.uk I try.

Any suggestions?
