Problems with Static IP route

Hi

I have 5 static IPs on my BT Hub.  I am using these for  a Firewall and various other test machines.  I also use the Wifi address 192.168.x.x with MAC address to connect mobiles within my house.

I want to be able to remote access a device that sits on the Static ip range. ( effectively a DMZ between BT and my internal FW)

I have opened up a pinhole on the BT 2700 router and I am able to connect, but to do this the router table requires me to allow a TCP port thru to a named IP inside, ie the static IP I allocated to the box I need to reach.

Remotely however I cannot connect to this IP at all.  The only way I can connect is to  use the BT router external   IP address . This is an 81.x.x.x address.

Thats OK and I can live with that, but  a major headache is that BT seem to change this address on a regular basis.

So when my remote access stops I have to re discover the external IP address in order to gain access again.

What I really wanted to do, and thought this would be possible is to  connect to the Static IP I  have directly.

I have tried to tracert to this address but cannot "see" it.

My questions are,

1, Isnt this Static supposed to be routable from the WWW?  and if so, who do I have to speak to to get that sorted?

2, If this is how its supposed to work - is there any way to get BT to stop changing the bridged IP assigned to my router so I dont have to keep discovering it?

Hope someone can help me.

thanks

Dear Skhm28,

The issue you describe may be caused by the routers configuration, to check that the Static IP’s have been configured on the router by using the Small office network guide found  here and check the Public IP settings on page 12 is set correctly with the IP address’s for your account.

If this is correct to confirm, have you manually assigned the IP to the device through the TCP/IP of the network card or through the router.  Again this can be checked on the router on the Small office network guide pages 13 and 14.  From Pages 15 to 17 details are given on how to configure Inbound and Outbound ports on the router to your network device for the service you wish to configure.

Please Note:- after saving any changes you may be asked you to enter the system password, this by default is the 12 digit S/N (Serial Number) of the router and can be found printed on the Routers white label.  Once this has been entered click submit and your will receive the “Configuration Successful” Page.  The statics are now set up on your New BT Business router

If you wish to downgrade to a single static IP address which will never change when you disconnect / Re-connect the Broadband connection, this can be done through the Manage Services area of your BT Connect account at myoffice.bt.com

Thanks for your reply.

I can confirm that the additional Static IP range is correctly  configured into the 2700 router.

The device I am  trying to reach has a hard coded static IP in it, part of the range of allocated numbers, ie its not DHCP.

I have coded a pinhole to allow the sockets thru I want but unless I actually point to  the BT outside IP address on the router I cannot connect remotely.  The Static IP I have allocated does not seem to be routable.  I would assume the NAT function on the router means the "outside" address is always going to be the one used, so would expect BT DNS to point  my allocated static IPs  to this  outside address - and to update that when BT changes it from time to time ( almost daily at the moment).

Is there someone that can check that ?

I just read a thorough post regarding the 2700 router and static IPs.

Seems the  WAN address  is "peered" to the static address and the 2700 informs the BT system ? ( DNS?)  each and everytime the WAN address changes.

There is some comment regarding the WAN address only changing when more than one IP address is  provided and that a user with one static Ip maintains the same WAN address all the time.

I need someone to tell me if what I am trying to achieve is possible, and then I can figure out if the problem is with some BT settings, or if its a setting on my local 2700.

So here is the description.

1, I have a BT BB setup, with 5 public Static IPs.

2, The WAN address changes frequently.

3, I have a device inside on the LAN which has a public static IP coded into it fixed. ( others as well)

4, I have created pin holes in the Firewall to allow remote access ports thru from the WAN to the Fixed static I have allocated.

(This shows up in the FW setup table as the variable WAN IP directed to the static IP)

I want to be able to remote to the public static IP address by entering this IP into a browser.

I would expect the router FW to pass the connection thru to the static IP device - but it doesn't.

The only way I can get a remote connection, is to put in the current WAN IP address of the 2700 (which changes frequently) - and rely on the pinhole to pass me thru to the static address.

I can use something like  DDNS service to monitor the WAN address and update entries, but in order to do this I have to run an application on the LAN and I don't want to do that.

I believe just by using the allocated public static IP in the browser  I should be able to  get access.

Am I wrong?

If there is a setting I need to check - appreciate any advice.
