SSL Certificate for CPanel

Hi,

I recently joined a vps host but i seen they allocated self sign ssl certificate which always showing expired or error.. i contact the host and they said that i need to buy my own SSL Certificate to avoid this problem.. however i understand SSL will encrypt my data. So i found RapidSSL is cheap... what about you say is it really required ?
