Upload speed of ADSL1

I've come to the end of my broadband contract with BT and I'm looking at the best options to renew. However I see I can still only get 448kbps upload speed with BT even though the modem reckons the max rate could be 1000 kbs.

Some of the other biz providers will provide over 800kbps upload on ADSL1, is there not yet a BT package on ADSL1 that will do that for me? I don't really want to move ISPs as the product has been good otherwise, but when I upload large files I'd like to do it at twice the speed since the hardware and line conditions can support it.

Ok, looks like I'm off to somewhere like ADSL24 who provide 832kb upload for about the same price as BT offer 448kb. And that's not using LLU - only BT equipment available at our exchange.

I still don't get why BT give ADSL2+ customers over 1Mb upload speeds (whatever the line can muster) but constrain users of ADSL1 to half of what the line can offer. BT Wholesale obviously make it technically possible or else other ISPs wouldn't be offering it. Seems strange that BT aren't willing to match the technical offerings of the competition.
