Hi there,
Im trying to assign a fixed public static ip address to one device, 'liltimmy-pc', however I'm getting an unknown error. Screenshots below:
How do I get around this error?
assuming you are not trying to tri-force (which should look like this)
Then i think we need more info as that is a symbol not an error message
when the pc is set tp obtain an ip automatically you just need to go to the router interface and in settings > lan > nat and address allocation look at liltimmy is status should be
Device Status : | Connected DHCP |
if is says static thats why it is failing.
if it is dhcp connected maybe you are trying to assign an ip already assigned to another pc?
Thanks for the assistance alistair,
As for the tri-force thing, I dont think so because I dont know what that is.
You gave me the idea of changing my specified IP in network connections, back to obtain IP address automatically. I am now able to do the following:
However, I am unable to select a fixed IP from the pool, because it gives me the same error. I have tried multiple different options from the drop down list with no avail.
Can you advise on this?
Also what does DHCP RENEW mean?
dhcp renew is why its not working yet.
it means you need to:
a) reboot the router
b) reboot the pc
c) unplug the ethernet cable for a few seconds and plug in again
or
d) at the command prompt type ipconfig /release then press enter then next line down type ipconfig /renew and press enter
in order of ease:
cabd
When I did all of those things and looked by at my router, it had reverted me back to what it was before (No public IP from pool). I dont understand why?
i suggest you almost start from scratch on this....
first make sure the pc is obtaining an ip automatically from the router.
then go into the router and clear the device list
go to settings > diagnostics > resets > "Clear Device List" click that button.
then reboot the router.
access the router page again and go to settings > lan > nat and address allocation
it should show device liltimmy (or its mac code in the form of unknowna1b7d54g)
for your device on the "address assignment" dropdown pick "public (select WAN ip mapping)"
next on the WAN ip mapping pick your desired static ip out of that list
go to the bottom and save.
reboot the pc and it will from now on be given that specific public ip address by the router all the time
PS. and this is important. can you confirm you have enabled the public ip address range on the routers broaband > link configuration section??? because if not then it wont give you the option to do what i suggested above
Ah! I have not enabled the Public IP address section. I have now tried putting in the info:
192.168.1.254
255.255.255.0
and ticking the box, but it gives me an unknown error again. Are those the correct details that I should put in the box? They match the figures in my ipconfig
the info you put in should not be the 192.168.1.254
you should use the "gateway address" of the public ip addresses BT have supplied you.
have you confirmed with BT that you have static ips on your account? and are they 13, 5 or 1?
Hi alastair, I've now solved this issue, however could I ask another question?
Is there a way to set up some sort of Dynamic DNS in the router that i have (the BT2700HGV business hub), that can automatically update my domain on www.dyndns.com without using a program running in the background of a running computer, but as some part of the interface of the router instead?
the 2700 doesnt do this as far as i know.
usually you can install a bit of software on the pc to update this dynamic dns address
