Why does the outgoing mail time out after a few seconds in Thunderbird

I have spoken with system support and they know that Outlook is unstable on Thunderbird. It can take me 4 or 5 attempts to send even one line emails. Is there anything I can do to alter this. I've altered the proxy setting to non but that does work all the time.
Is there a fix for this. It's only started since the change over. Also for the record the settings in the auto set up are completely wrong. Is this going to be altered.

Change to a much better email hosting client. That should fix your problem.

I'm not sure what you mean, are you referring to Thunderbird or Outlook (for BT). Thunderbird has never been an issue for the years that I have had it. Ever since Windows Live Messenger (which I don't use, but my wife does) and my son, when I receive emails by this medium it's a nightmare. It's not even compatable with Yahoo or Gmail. It's trying to force you to opt for it but when you use Pop which is far more convenient why would you want to.
I've looked at reviews for outlook, and the most polite I can find is 'it's rubbish'. Why would BT subject their customers to a system that won't work on open source when that sector is getting bigger and bigger.

Having the same problem and when I contacted support they suggest our hardware was a problem. We installed a new router and filter and the problem still exists. Seems BT can't be bothered. I could be wrong but I'm wondering if it is a timing issue. Thunderbird doesn't seem to receive or recognise any acknowledgement of receipt from the smtp server for the sent mail so TB doesn't think the send has been successful (which in our case it has) but doesn't put a copy in the sent folder. We know the send has been successful as we get a read receipt and on occasion an email asking why it's been sent so many times. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft isn't playing nice either.

Sadly with BT it's always someone elses fault. The problem still persists although strangely not as often. As for the return messages, I also use that method however some set up their systems not to acknowledge receipt, so not conclusive.
I suspect you could be right, as I said with an email via live messenger it tries to get me to sign up each time.

Connection security to ; SSL/TLS
Authentication to ; normal password
and for outgoing
server name to ; pod51014.outlook.com port 587
Connection security to ; STARTTLS
Authentication to ; normal password

Hi Shaun,
Thanks for the fix, after a couple of mispellings I finally got it right. Strangely enough these were the settings when I tried to use the automated system, which rejected my password. I contacted support and the guy said the settings were completely wrong and gave me
pop.outloo.com and smtp.outlook.com
everything else the same but he still had to reset my password, I'm wondering if he had reset it first the original settings would have worked.
Being a cynic I am going to keep both just in case

Well that was short lived, getting unsent message once again. So it does seem that BT's servers are the problem rather than Thunderbird.
