Hi, I set up my website a few months ago now and google still can't seem to find it. I've managed to submit it to google and get it verified - but the rest of the instructions and tips on how to get google to find my site are like a foreign language to me.

if anyone can help - i'd really appreciate it! my website is: www.worldofcake.co.uk

thanks!

Hi  I had a look at your site.

I think part of the problem may be your keyword density.  Not sure what software you are using (I've taken the easiest option on my site www.NoahsArkGifts.co.uk and use a BT shop where it has a WYSIWYG editor for the html), but it looks like you need to change your text format - to make it easier and more logical for the spiders to read.

EG: Give each cake example a Heading 1 title such Intertwined Rings Wedding Cake, a Heading 2 subline of One chocolate and one lemon sponge to make a beautifully unique Wedding Cake, then do the main description in a paragraph text - all the different heading and paragraph text can have their size changes so you can have all the text the same size if you want.  The main thing is that you want to repeat your keywords and also attach then to your images.

With regard to the images I noticed you have no title or enlargement on your photos. This would help as it can get you listed in the images part of google searches.  See whether you can add Alt text to your this is a facility originally set up for the visually impaired to describe the image but now used for SEO.  So label your image as, say Interwined Rings Wedding Cake and described the wedding cake in the Alt text.

More internal and external links will also help - maybe link form a cake to a happy customer story or testimonial.

Keep updating small bit s of the website, which will keep the search engine interest - they don't hold much regard to websites which are seldom updated.

There are a couple of other things you could do mostly to do with SEO, I don't want to insult you if you have good knowledge of SEO but if you want help the best guide is published by Google, easy to find.  Otherwise contact your local Business Link advisor to see if they have any free courses _ that's how I learned and got listed on Google within 3 weeks.

Dear Joyce,

I found your site using Google UK and the search words "Wedding Cake World of Cake". Google found 4 million possibles but you were on the first page. It's a crowded field. Noah's Ark is quite right about the behind-the-scenes meta tags to make it obvious what you supply. I don't use Easy Site Wizard, but someone may be able to offer advice about where to enter the tags. If there's something specific about your service that people want, Google will let them find it.

If you mainly supply locally rather than worldwide, consider registering with Google Maps. It is free, except Google may start sending you special introductory offers. Try googling for "cake" and your postcode, and look for "add a place to the map" at the bottom left of the results page. I don't suppose there are 4 million speciality bakers with your postcode.

I've never felt the need for the extra step that is sponsoring links through Google Addwords. I personally find unsponsored links more appealing than sponsored ones. Other forum users may advise differently.

It's a smart web site. I wish your business every success.

Hi guys - thanks for the tips - I will definately try them out. I'm using the EasySite Wizard stuff as my hosting is through BT and have no idea how to do it any other way anyway. (So no worries about insulting me, i only just about know what SEO stands for, let alone how to go about it!)

i'm not sure what you mean by changing the text format - i'll give the different headings thing a go though.

Am I right in thinking the only way to do the enlargements for the photo's is to create a 'new page' for each one?

This is my first attempt at doing anything like this - so all tidbits of help are welcome!

Thank you!!!

Hi Joyce,

Having started work on my third website for a friend and just retired from the outside catering and celebration cake business, I can understand your frustrations. I dont have any real web design knowledge but have muddled through and learned as I went. My advice to you at the moment would be to forget about Google for the time being and list your business manually in as many free business directories and specific wedding directory sites as possible in your area (both Inverurie & Aberdeen). This will give you an instant presence on Google. Hotfrog, uksmallbusinessdirectory and Free Index are particularly good but there are many many more for your field. Some directories will want to charge but ignore those there are plenty that are free. Just do a search for wedding cakes Inverurie on Google and you will find plenty to add your site to for a start. It is a bit tedious but well worth the effort. Best of luck. Mags
