Hi
I'm hoping I can get some guidance here
I am considering opening a new BT Business Infinity broadband account (I currently have broadband with another ISP).
However when I called BT Business sales this afternoon to start this process I was told by them I had to take out a £15 per month web hosting package in order to transfer my current .com domain name to BT. I don't want or need to host a web site - I only use the domain for email, so all I want is to be able to have mail sent to my registered domain delivered to the mailbox associated with the BT account i wish to open (I guess this is "aliasing").
Do I really need to pay out £15 per month to do this- if so I doubt I will make the change & will just stay with my current ISP
There is no need for you to purchase the webhosting pack for email accounts. All you need to do is contact the technical helpdesk and ask for mail relay to be setup for your domain. They will do a couple of checks to confirm you own the domain. Once this is confirmed they will add your domain to be allowed to send mail via BT's mail servers. All you need to do then is change your outgoing mail server to mail.btconnect.com.
Hi helpinghands
Thanks for the response, but don't I still need to transfer registration of my domain to BT. It is currently registered through my current ISP (Demon) so when I close my account with them I have to move it?
User: helpinghands isn't quite correct in his advice, cdc126, if you only wish to relay outgoing mail, no changes to your domain's Mail records are required. He is referring to listing the domain name for full e-mail service. For this, we usually require that you have either Web hosting or Business E-mail Plus set up on the account:
Business Email
You have several options.
If you still have mail service for your domain, you could simply use your existing incoming mail setup, then relay outgoing mail through our servers (you will need the domain name listed on your new BT account for mail relay).
You could alternatively forward e-mail to your @btconnect.com address and relay outgoing mail as above.
Beyond that, you could always simply transfer the domain name in (you don't require web hosting to do this, sorry if you were mis-informed). Here's how to do that:
That might be the theory, but in practice it doesn't work!
I requested email relay over four weeks ago, and sent the requested fax, and sent regular emails repeating the information and stressing the urgency and importance of the problem. but apart from one email asking me to email the information again, I have heard nothing at all.
To sell a product as "Business Broadband" but then to prevent business email must surely be verging on the fraudulent!
This has actually been resolved succesfully - I did as John suggested & transferred my domain into BT, which is all I wanted to do in the first place.
The original question was raised because somebody on the sales line told me I needed to take out the full £15 per month hosting package to do this, which has been proved to be incorrect.
