Move landline number from business account to a domestic account

We have a BT line taken out late 70's as a business line, still active.

Father been retired for many years,  can he move to a domestic home telephone contract and keep the original number?

On benifits that would qualify him for BT Home essentials saving a considerable amount a month compared to business contract costs.

Yes  your father can usually move from a BT Business line to a residential contract and keep the original number, provided the line is still active and within the same local exchange. BT allows number transfers (called “number porting”) between business and residential services, and if he qualifies for BT Home Essentials, he could save significantly compared to business tariffs.
