Previously my client was using a Netgear ADSL mode/router with a Watchguard Firebox to connect from outside to SBS2003 purely for sync'ing with a Sage Act! database. The router was getting very hot and they decided to replace the router and firewall with the BT 2701HGV-C.
The problem is the usual one of the WAN connection not using/picking up the fixed IP address the company have, but assigning a seemingly dynamic one. Connection to the server from outside is purely for Sage Act! (and my use of Remote Desktop, although I have been using LogMeIn of late because of the IP address problem!).
I do not need to route five IP addresses to different machines/services and just want the IP address of the 'office' to be the old fixed IP address. What do I need to change on the router to achieve this? Is it just a case of changing the settings in: Settings, Broadband, Public IP Address to the fixed IP address they formerly got/used on the old router? What Subnet mask should be used? And do I tick 'Auto Firewall Enable'?
As I am some distance from the customer I will be doing this remotely via LogMeIn to the server and then via the web interface in the router. Obviously I will lose connection when the chages are made and do not want to be in a situation where connectivity is lost and cannot be restored without a visit to change the settings back. If I made changes which led to internet access being disabled this would be the case!
I know this is a relatively simple problem but I would appreciate some guidance please before I make the changes.
TIA
Have you tried using Team Viewer instead of LogMeIn and see the difference?
Hi,
Only way you can have a static IP on the router in the way that you want is to move back to a single static IP, unless BT change their system at some point.
A-hill might be able to help more, as he's a network bod, but I suspect he'll tell you something similar.
Cheers.

The Netgear would have allowed the use of a static IP on the WAN port due to the way it still grabs the subnet and gateway dynamically, our static IP's are 'leased sticky' IP's (dynamic IP's stuck to an account) and don't have dedicated gateways. The 2701 Broadband IP Network section must have all details specified manually and in effect just doesn't work.
You'll either need to get a replacement Netgear and config the IP on the WAN port again (we don't officially endorse or support this, so if it stops working there's not much we can do about it as it's a non-standard setup) or as wolf says, downgrade to a single static IP address.
