2701HGV-C "BTBusinessHub-868" SSID keeps stopping

I have a BT Business router model 2701HGV-C

There are 3 PCs connected wireless using the "BTBusinessHub-868" SSID

The Vista PCs lose the BTBusinessHub connection every 5 minutes or so. I dont appear to have this problem with a Windows 7 machine. I also have a Sony Bravia Internet TV which appear to loss connectivity to the "BTBusinessHub-868" SSID.

The BT openzone SSID is always available even when the "BTBusinessHub-868" SSID dissappears.

Any suggestions?

Are all devices configured to use DHCP as an IP address conflict could cause this to drop, try switching the devices on 1 by 1 starting with the router Obviously and leaving a 30 min gap, if it's a device on the network causing it to drop then this test may pinpoint it.

Other thing you may try is factory resetting the wirless function on the router, done as follows:

Log into the router via address 192.168.1.254 through your browser, click settings > Diagnostics > Resets > Wireless Configuration Reset

I am using DHCP and each device does appear to have its own IP addresses and no reports of address clashes.

Interestingly, I did turn-off the BTOpenZone SSID. no problems for 24 hours now!  - any comments on this?

I have the openzone turned off and yet still the wifi stops dead.  I can see that there is a signal and yet nothing happens.  There are no ip conflicts on my kit as I have released the IP on each of the laptops and then rebooted just to be sure.

The really weird thing is that if I plug a laptop (doesn't matter which one) in via ethernet, then the wifi starts to work again.   Within 60 seconds of unplugging a laptop from ethernet the wifi stops working again.

I had to walk away from it in the end last night as it was doing my head in.

BRABUS is yours also a Vista machine? Some Atheros and Broadcom chipsets on Vista machines had driver issues with wireless networks running WPA encryption, my parents Vista machine flat out refused to connect to their Business Hub. I ran a Windows update check and in the optional updates section was a patch for the wireless chipset... applied the update and all was working fine.

There's also the usual changing the wireless channel in case it's being drowned out by other wireless signals in the area at the same frequency. Also to be sure it's not a WPA issue, try temporarily setting the wireless security to WEP with a custom key (passwords with wep can only contain numbers 0-9 and letters A-F)... this will at least narrow down an encryption problem.

No the machines are all XP or Windows 7.  I have been running innSider from Metageek to check for channel conflicts and I have been making sure I use one that no one else is on.  I am getting a very strong signal as well so I am puzzled.

I shall give the WEP a try and fingers crossed.  The weird thing is that it worked fine for about 28 hours?

There is always a risk of someone being able to register if you do this but if you make sure all PC firewalls and AV are OK you could consider tuurning OFF any wireless security for a short period and seeing if the issue remains.

I have done this a few times to investigate problems and whilst there is a small risk it will allow you to prove if it is the hardware failing or the level of security.

If all is OK with none,  go to WEP and a suitable key and then up to WPA.

Being on an adjacent channel is not enough - ideally you need to be 4 or 5 away to minimise interference.   What happens to te signal strength when you have a problem?

I always try to pick a channel that is furthest away from the others so do not use adjacent ones.  When the problem happens the signal strength remains constant at a good high level.
