Activating 2nd domain against existing hosting account?

DianeM

Hi can anyone help? I have an existing hosting account and domain name which OK. Yesterday I decided to purchase a second domain name whcih went thru and appears on my domain account. When I ordered the domain the confirmation message said "after your domain name has been provisioned you will need to activate this domain against your hosting account. This is really easy to do & and gave 3 short steps. However the instructions given seem to relate to activating a web hosting package for the first time - not setting up a second domain within an existing hosting account. I read some other posts about setting up a secondary domain, but it seemed confusing? Could anyone explain what I need to do Thanks D.

Hi DianeM,

I am sorry to read about the problems that you are experiencing with your 2nd Domain Name.

The message the you have received is indeed advice for an initial activation, not required for second domains. This really comes down to what you want to do. If you wish to have the two domains pointed at the same site you should log into Myoffice, go to manage services, then manage domains and then use the forwarding to point it at the address for the webhosting package. If you want a secondary site then you must either upload the site to a subfolder or use the site builder to create a site in a subfolder and then use the above forwarding tool to point the domain at this.

Here is the tricky bit, there are two types of forwarding. URL or Frame:

URL: This will divert to the site but show the physical address of the page ie www.yourdomain.com/subfolder.

Frame: This will show the site within the browser as www.seconddomain.com.

However some browsers and bad coding will break this type of forwarding so it's not perfect.

As an addendum, there is a fault at the moment with the forwarding sometimes not being applied due to a locked A record on the domain.

Should this happen have them visit www.dnsforms.co.uk (actually a URL forward to a page within the help and support pages) and fill in the DNS enquiry form (click dns enquiry then email BT) and it'll get sorted.

This is the link to assist with all Domain queries / issues.

Hope this is of help

The third (and best, however more expensive) option would be to add a second hosting package to the account, which you could then activate usign your second domain.

thank you very much! I'll have a go and see if I can work it out regards D.

Thanks for reply - this would certainly seem to be the best solution were it not for the cost! I'll see if I can work it around the "longer" method as only wanted an additional one page site off my primary. regards D.

Hi Tracey

This has worked up to a point where I have had an "error" message. I created a new site in a subfolder off my hosting/primary site as you suggested, and went to Manage Domains to forward my secondary domain to this subfolder. I tested the link and it came up fine with the new site I'd just created...(altho the preview window showed the same address regardless of whether I choose Frame or URL however that is not a big issue).. I thought my problems were over... However! when I tried to save the page, i got the following message in red "You are trying to set a www record, when one already exists for this domain. This can cause issues with the domain resolving properly. None of the changes just submitted have been saved. If you need to change a www record please use Advanced Domain Manager.". I had a look at the advanced domain manager but all at sea there! Can you help again please - many thanks Di.

This sounds like a system error. If you fill in the online request form at dnsforms.co.uk (general enquiry), the domain name server desk will action the forwarding for you.
