Just thought I'd post this to help people who may have to spend an age on the phones to BT support trying to figure out what's going on.
All domain hosting is currently down. If your domain is hosted with BT you will not be able to resolve DNS records or access the domain control panel in the BT portal.
I have been told they "hope" to fix this in the next 3 hours.
This level of service is really not acceptable.

We were aware of an issue with the servers earlier this morning and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
This has now been resolved and all websites should be restored.
If you are still having problems, please clear your cache and cookies which may resolve the issue.
If this does not work, please let us know by using the dns enquiry form at www.dnsforms.co.uk.

I have split the DNS internally as we can't afford this kind of disruption during business hours. I'll test it out of hours to ensure it's back up for us.
Can you please explain what happened, and what measures BT have put in place to stop it happening again? Without these reassurances we'll need to look elsewhere.

The issue was caused by a loss of connection to the data centre.
Please note this did not only affect BT Hosted sites, other providers sites were affected as well.
I cannot comment on the measures that are taking place to prevent this happening again as it is still under investigation.
