DID number portability?

i think it's "DID" i'm not too sure:

i have an 0800 number with a service provider, however, the number is currently not 'working' as the provider is having problems.

is it possible (given i 'own' the number) to have this number transfered to another provider altogether myself and how does one do this?

(ukphoneinfo.com shows the number as being allocated to BT's range so i assume they have control of it.)

thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can offer

I believe it isn't possible as different providers have different number codes.

thanks but the info from Ofcom suggests the range of number that mine is in are overseen by BT.

surely they could do an equivalent of a cease and re-provide or something like that.  Presumably the number is allocated to third parties and BT still has overall control of where they are routed - e.g. i wonder if BT will allow me to take a contract with them for their 0800 service and then continue to use the number rather than losing it altogether?
