Editing a non-BT website

Hi there!

I have a web hosting package with BT which holds an externally designed website (Adobe Contribute) - am I not able to edit it using the BT site?

Don't really want to buy Contribute if I can help it or keep paying designer for simple changes!

Here's a list of free HTML editors that can be used to perform pretty much the same as Adobe Contribute, though strictly speaking any really minor text changes could probably be made quite easily opening up the page using Notepad. You should be able to search for and replace text easily enough but anything else and you will need assistance from one of the many free HTML tutorial sites.

If you plan to be adding more content on a regular basis then suggest you consider swapping over to a Content Management System (CMS) such as Wordpress.

Hi mitch. Got any luck on this so far?

I'm getting frustrated because I'm not an IT guru, as you can probably tell!

I can indeed edit in Notepad but then how do I save it and publish it on my website?

I tried an HTML editor but it couldn't connect due to my login info, which I know is correct.

And using an FTP client just wouldn't connect to the server - it just kept timing out!!!

Grrr!

Have a rummage through the settings of your FTP client and look for a box marked "Use Passive FTP" and see it its been set.

Hi Mitchhogg,

In a lot of cases being unable to connect to ftp is due to a missing ftp record.

To bypass this please use the following information.

Host - 209.235.144.9

User - yourdomain.co.uk

Pass - your ftp password.

Kind Regards,

Ian - F -
